The overall objective of the intervention services program is to provide support and assistance to children and their families who are in crisis and may be having contact with the criminal justice and child welfare systems for the first time after a report of abuse. The advocate educates families about the role of each of the investigating agencies, how the investigation will proceed, and the systems that are in place to help children and families who are experiencing a crisis. The emphasis is on making this process less stressful and more empowering. Support, information, referrals, and resources are provided to children and their families and to other professionals. Families are informed about the Crime Victim’s Compensation program, which provides financial assistance to victims of violent crimes, and assistance is offered in completing the necessary paperwork.

Members of the multidisciplinary team may request crisis intervention for children or families during the forensic interview process. The goals for crisis intervention are to provide stabilization; help identify, and diffuse feelings; help identify coping strategies, strengths, resources, and a support system; and help the client develop alternative methods to express feelings and cope. In the event there is a concern regarding the risk of suicide, a suicide assessment is conducted to determine the level of risk and the need for further intervention to insure safety.
